HISTORIC CHURCH STREET

Located in the beautiful heritage town of Tulbagh in the Cape winelands, Yellowwood House takes pride of place in one of South Africa's most historic streets. Lovingly restored with its original yellowwood beams, floors and iconic Cape Dutch architecture, local tradition meets modern comfort of crisp linen, stylish decor and homely living. This unique property includes two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, reception room, large living area, kitchen, guest bathroom, spacious courtyard and private swimming pool.

MORE INFO

Combining old world charm and modern day comfort, Yellowwood House offers an idyllic country retreat immersed in South Africa's rich architectural heritage.

Built in the late 1700s, this delightful Cape Dutch house is still in pristine condition with yellowwood floors and ceilings throughout. Originally the residence of local entrepreneur Hendrick Lodewyk, the house has been lovingly cared for over the years, and was even converted to serve as Tulbagh's first English Free School in the early 19th century. We invite you to immerse yourself in this very special part of South Africa's history.

You will find Yellowwood House in the middle of Tulbagh's historic Church Street, flanked by the largest number of Cape Dutch Edwardian and Victorian provincial heritage sites in one street in South Africa. Every house in our street has been proclaimed a national monument, each with a plaque that tells its story and how it was restored after the earthquake of 1969. In fact, Gawie Fagan, arguably one of South Africa's greatest architects and responsible for rebuilding Tulbagh after the earthquake, was born in the house in 1925.

NEWLY RENOVATED AS IN NEW ROOF, NEW ELECTRICS, NEW PLUMBING, NEW POOL, TOP QUALITY VICTORIAN BATHROOMS FITTINGS AND FULLY AIR-CONDITIONED.

Discovering Tulbagh

Nestled in an unspoilt, fertile valley surrounded by magnificent mountains, farms and orchards, the charming town of Tulbagh is only a 90-minute scenic drive from Cape Town. Famous for its heritage and magnificent country living, Tulbagh is South Africa's fourth oldest town after Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and Swellendam.

Tulbagh is an excellent base for exploring the Cape Winelands and surrounding areas with Ceres, Prince Alfred Hamlet, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, Malmesbury and Riebeek Valley less than hour away.

Whether you're looking for cultural experiences or adventure, Tulbagh is a magical destination for all seasons. For the culturally inclined, charming galleries and museums await, as well as world class wine tasting, restaurants, olive and even chocolate tasting. If you are feeling more adventurous, there are magnificent hiking trails, mountain biking, fishing and birding as well as horse riding in the foothills of the Winterhoek and Witzenberg mountains. The people of Tulbagh are renowned for their warmth and easygoing hospitality!

The community in Tulbagh will suit you very well. In addition to like minded souls there are a multitude of benefits which are almost unique to Tulbagh as a village.

Here are a few, in no order:
Only an hour and a half on exceptionally good roads to Cape Town.
Private school.
No seasonal or weekend traffic jams out of Cape Town as with the. N1 and N2. Coming back to Cape Town from those sides on a Sunday or after a long weekend is a nightmare. In my mind Cape Town has only one negative and that is traffic. No traffic problems in the Tulbagh direction.
At the end of a valley, no through road or traffic.
Very beautifully situated, magnificent vistas wherever you are.
Snow in winter.
Longest street of preserved cape Dutch houses in the country.
Well serviced by shops etc and if anything more is needed it is surrounded by larger centres, ie Malmesbury, Paarl, Ceres, Worcester etc.
No need to run a gauntlet of squatter camps as with the Hermanus etc commute.
Wonderful trails and climbs in the surrounding area.
Modern bohemian community.
Excellent historic wine farming area, lots of estates to visit. Krone for champagne tastings, Lemberg for wine and excellent brandy, Saronsberg for award winning wines, I could go on and on.
Magnificent, majestic natural vistas.
Retains its country town feel.
A big plus in my mind is that it is not a through road, ie no traffic noise.
Christmas in winter.
Relatively undiscovered.
Permanent inhabitants, few swallows.
Property prices are still low by Cape Town standards.
Close to the iconic towns of Darling, Paarl, Riebeeck Kasteel etc.
All service providers are present. Anything can be done.
It's a working, economically active town not reliant on tourism and seasonal influxes of people.
Local, involved, permanent community.
Let's not forget about the fabulous Tulbagh plant nursery.
It has its own 'arty' community.
Close enough to the sea if you feel like a day at the beach.
Best route to and from Cape Town is through Malmesbury.
Tulbagh Hotel is very good for a meal.
Good restaurants, something for everyone.
The strangest thing is that there are no signs to Tulbagh on any of the highways or main roads, a real hidden valley.
The new West Coast airport will be a game changer for Tulbagh which is still undiscovered. Best kept secret.
Where shall I stop? I could go on and on.
